You’ll focus Dress Fashions on ways in which different social world and national or ethnic and gender groups fashion dress express their identities through their dress. At the same time in fasion dress, you’ll assess the importance of fashion in stimulating consumption and its effects on marketing and retailing.
You’ll begin to understand the class structures and status markers of societies over the past two hundred years. What did they buy and how? From the catalogues in department stores to the early history of mail order clothes buying and the surprising revelations this brings of, for example, women in the workplace.
How was clothing designed? How was it written about? How were garments preserved, treasured or discarded? What can archive films, photographs or prints teach us about societies’ attitudes through the way people dressed for work, sport and leisure?
While you’re learning about the dress and clothing styles and interests over the past 200 years, you’ll be in a city where vintage clothing shops are commonplace and an ‘anything goes’ cultural scene brings its own opportunities to observe and be a part of the changing world of fashion.
You’ll get to join in with the local collections at Brighton and Worthing Museums in their work at all levels with dress of fasions, completing your degree with the support of specialist on dress historians and resources.
